About Romeo And Juliet Law

Romeo And Juliet Law is an independent educational resource focused on age-of-consent laws and the close-in-age exceptions often called “Romeo and Juliet” laws. It exists to help readers understand how these laws work in plain language, across every U.S. jurisdiction, without wading through dense statutory text.

What this site covers

This site publishes guides for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, along with federal context and a glossary of related legal terms. Each guide looks at the applicable age of consent, any close-in-age provision, and how the underlying statute is structured.

Our approach

State guides are built by prioritizing official statutes, state legislature and government publications, court materials, and other authoritative primary sources where available. Details on how sources are selected and cited are in our sources and methodology page. Where a state’s law is complex, unsettled, or subject to differing interpretation, that is disclosed directly rather than presented with false certainty.
